Can I get a CCNA practice lab or a Cisco Packet Tracer file from ChatGPT?

Yes, two ways. For the CLI, ask for the topic (OSPF areas, inter-VLAN routing, ACLs, NAT) and the assistant builds it on real Cisco IOL router images in your NetPilot lab and runs the show commands with you, which is where the habits that only work in the simulator break. For a .pkt file, ask for the topology and the configs and you get a download link that opens in Cisco Packet Tracer, no lab VM needed. Both come from NetPilot connected in ChatGPT, Claude or Meta Muse.

How it works, in four steps

  1. 1

    Pick the CCNA topic

OSPF single and multi-area, inter-VLAN routing, standard and extended ACLs, NAT and PAT, DHCP, static routes, STP. Say the topic and how many devices, in plain words.

  2. 2

The assistant builds it on real router images

NetPilot designs the topology, writes the configs and deploys the routers on your lab VM. Cisco IOL is a bring-your-own image, added once in the NetPilot app, and the same lab runs on the built-in FRR and Nokia SR Linux images while you wait for a Cisco image.

  3. 3

    Run the show commands together

Ask for show ip ospf neighbor, show ip route, show vlan brief, show ip interface brief, show ip access-lists or show ip nat translations, and the assistant quotes the output from the device and explains the lines you ask about. Break something on purpose and watch the output change.

  4. 4

Or ask for the Cisco Packet Tracer file

Describe the topology and the configs and the assistant hands back a .pkt download link, valid for 60 minutes, that opens in Cisco Packet Tracer. The simulator stays where you submit the assignment, the file just arrives already wired.

Say this for the real-CLI lab

Build a three-router OSPF lab on Cisco IOL: R1 and R2 in area 0, R3 in area 1 behind R2, a loopback on each router advertised into OSPF. Then run show ip ospf neighbor and show ip route ospf on R1 and explain what each line means.

Say this for the Cisco Packet Tracer file

Design a small office network for Cisco Packet Tracer: one router, two switches, two VLANs with inter-VLAN routing on the router, DHCP for the PCs, and export it as a .pkt file I can open.

What the output looks like

The OSPF lab from the first prompt, read on R1. The neighbour is FULL, the area 0 routes show as O, and R3's loopback shows as O IA because it lives in area 1 and arrived through R2. Ask "why is the last route O IA" and the assistant answers from this output.

R1
R1# show ip ospf neighbor

Neighbor ID Pri State Dead Time Address Interface
10.255.0.2 1 FULL/DR 00:00:36 10.0.12.2 GigabitEthernet0/1

R1# show ip route ospf
10.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted, 7 subnets, 2 masks
O 10.0.23.0/30 [110/2] via 10.0.12.2, 00:04:11, GigabitEthernet0/1
O 10.255.0.2/32 [110/2] via 10.0.12.2, 00:04:11, GigabitEthernet0/1
O IA 10.255.0.3/32 [110/3] via 10.0.12.2, 00:03:52, GigabitEthernet0/1

The Cisco Packet Tracer file

The second prompt ends with a .pkt file and a short list of first-time steps for opening it. This is the same export the NetPilot web app hands back, shown here for an office network.

What you need

  • A NetPilot account on Pro, Max, Team or Signature, including a Team seat or a Signature seat in an organization. On Free or Plus you can connect and sign in, and each tool answers with a note that the feature is included from Pro.
  • NetPilot connected in your assistant: ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Claude Code or Meta Muse. The lab VM is created the first time you ask the assistant to start it, and the .pkt export needs no VM.
  • For Cisco CLI practice, a Cisco IOL image added once in the NetPilot app (bring-your-own-image, BYOI). FRR and Nokia SR Linux are built in and run the same routing labs with their own syntax.
  • Cisco Packet Tracer installed where you open the .pkt file, as for any assignment.

Common questions

Yes. With NetPilot connected in ChatGPT, Claude or Meta Muse, you ask for a CCNA topic and the assistant builds the lab on real Cisco IOL router images in your NetPilot lab VM and runs the show commands with you, or you ask for the topology as a Cisco Packet Tracer file and get a .pkt download link that opens in the simulator. The lab needs a NetPilot plan from Pro up for the assistant route. The same lab and the same .pkt export are also built in the NetPilot web app, where the free tier covers a first lab.
OSPF is the documented case: hello and dead timers, network types, the interface state after a passive-interface change and the LSA database detail are simplified in the simulator, so a lab that forms neighbours in Cisco Packet Tracer can fail on real IOS with the same config. Our write-up on OSPF in Cisco Packet Tracer versus real routers lists each divergence with the command that shows it. Practise the topic on real images once before an exam or a job, and keep Cisco Packet Tracer for the assignments that must be handed in as a .pkt.
No. The .pkt export is a design tool: the assistant designs the topology, generates the configs and writes the file, and the download link works for 60 minutes. The real-CLI lab is the part that needs the lab VM, which NetPilot creates for your account the first time you ask the assistant to start it.
